Rhode Island Jeet Kune Do & Filipino Martial Arts
Teaching JKD & FMA in RI since 1993

What is Jeet Kune DoThe term “Jeet Kune Do” was coined and put into use in 1967 by Bruce Lee in an attempt to put a name to his martial expression. Jeet Kune Do translated means “The Way of the Intercepting Fist.” The goal was to create a martial art devoted to self-defense with no rituals, esthetics, or sport techniques. With Wing Chun at the core of his system, Bruce Lee incorporated a modification of various techniques from various Chinese systems, Western Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Judo, as well as Jiu Jitsu. Innovative and radically ahead of his time in his training and teaching methodology, Bruce Lee developed a martial system and fighting strategy that has lost none of its effectiveness over time.Students are taught to confidently “flow” from long distance, (kicking range), to middle distance, (hand range), to close quarter, (trapping & grappling range). The movements are crisp, and efficient, utilizing the most direct lines and angles. JKD affords the practitioner a means by which to effectively pursue the most direct line of attack. The Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do classes at the Derderian Academy are devoted entirely to teaching and preserving the arts & philosophies of the late Bruce Lee. Students develop attributes, such as coordination, timing, speed, endurance, strength and agility, using the innovative teaching and training methods developed by Bruce Lee, and preserved and taught to today by his protégé, student, and training partner, Dan Inosanto. All classes are taught in a safe and controlled manner. We are proud of our great school spirit and culture. It is family of JKD students who work hard, laugh, and learn together.Sifu Raffi Derderian is certified to teach JF/JKD by Sifu Dan Inosanto and Sifu Kevin Seaman. Sifu Raffi is the only Inosanto certified instructor in Rhode Island and one of the few in the Northeast USA.
